The setup timeline, step by step
Setting up a merch store with Print Your Cause is not a do-it-yourself software project. The process starts when you submit the store request form. A real person replies — usually within a business day — to learn about your organization and what you want to sell.
From there, we build the store with you, and the build itself takes about one business day. You provide your logo or artwork as vectorized .ai, .eps, or .pdf files, or as a high-resolution .png. If the files need work, help with vectorizing, digitizing, or design is available; additional fees may apply and are billed on time spent.
Before launch, every design is reviewed by a print professional, and your organization approves everything before the store goes live. The two fixed steps are short — a reply usually within a business day and a build of about one business day — so the overall timeline mostly depends on how quickly artwork and approvals move on your side. The full process is described on our how it works page.
How long until the first sale?
For most organizers, the real question behind "how long does setup take" is "how soon will we see our first order." Our own order data gives a concrete answer. Among organizations whose accounts were created in January 2024 or later and that went on to make a sale (n = 822), 22% had their first sale within 7 days of account creation and 25% within 9 days. The median was 28 days, and 53% had sold within 30 days (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026).
That spread reflects each organization's own calendar more than any platform delay. A store built the week before a season kickoff can sell almost immediately; a store built during a quiet stretch may wait for the next event or announcement. Because stores stay open year-round — for a few weeks of targeted fundraising or continuously, whichever you choose — launching early never wastes a selling window.
Momentum also builds quickly once selling starts: the median gap between an organization's first and second sale is 6 days (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026).
How to keep setup moving
- Have artwork ready. Vectorized .ai, .eps, or .pdf files, or a high-resolution .png, keep the build on its one-business-day track.
- Decide your prices early. You set the final sales price on every item and make 100% of the difference between the item cost and the sales price, so settling pricing up front removes a round of back-and-forth.
- Plan your announcement. The gap between launch and first sale usually belongs to the organization's calendar, so line up an email, meeting, or event to point supporters at the new store.
There is no cost to get started. The Starter plan is $0 per month, there are no minimums and no inventory to buy, and every item is printed on demand and shipped to each buyer — so setup never involves ordering stock, and you pay only when products sell.
