Which custom products can be printed on demand, and which need a bulk order?

Nearly everything in the standard catalog — apparel, hats, bags, and other merch — prints on demand, one item at a time, with no minimums. Screen printing is the main exception: it's built for volume, so it's offered on bulk orders, and specialty promo items are usually quoted as one-time bulk orders too. We sort products into the right path with you when we build your store.

Key facts

  • Digital printing (direct-to-garment + direct-to-film): about 63% of items (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026)
  • Embroidery: about 19% of items (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026)
  • Screen printing, the bulk-order method: about 11% of items (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026)
  • Engraving: about 4% of items (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026)

What prints on demand

Print Your Cause stores run on on-demand production: when a supporter buys an item, that single piece is decorated and shipped to the buyer. There is no inventory to order up front and no minimum quantity, because the decoration methods behind the standard catalog work on one unit at a time.

Six methods cover the on-demand catalog of apparel, hats, bags, and other merch:

  • Direct-to-garment (DTG) and direct-to-film (DTF) digital printing, for full-color artwork on apparel
  • Dye sublimation, for edge-to-edge color on suitable products
  • Embroidery, for a stitched, dimensional look on hats, polos, and bags
  • UV printing and engraving, for hard-surface items

These methods carry nearly all real-world sales. Across the items organizations have sold through Print Your Cause, digital printing accounts for about 63%, embroidery about 19%, and engraving about 4% (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026).

What needs a bulk order

Screen printing is the main exception. Each color in a screen-printed design needs its own screen prepared before the first shirt prints, so the method suits larger runs of a single design rather than one-at-a-time production. Print Your Cause offers screen printing for bulk orders, with special bulk pricing available on request; about 11% of all items sold are screen printed (Print Your Cause order data, Jan 2024-Jul 2026). Details are on the bulk order page.

Specialty and promotional items follow the same path. Products outside the standard on-demand catalog are typically quoted as one-time bulk orders, because the quote depends on product availability, decoration method, minimums, freight, and supplier lead time — factors confirmed for each request rather than listed as flat prices.

How to decide — and how to do both

Use the product and the design as the guide. If it is apparel, a hat, a bag, or similar merch decorated with digital printing, embroidery, dye sublimation, UV printing, or engraving, it belongs in your on-demand store: supporters order individual items whenever they want, each piece is printed after purchase, and nothing is left over.

If the job is one large run of a single design, or a specialty item outside the standard catalog, request a bulk quote instead. The two paths are not exclusive — bulk printing and shipping are available alongside the on-demand store, so an organization can keep a year-round store open for supporters and place a consolidated bulk order when an event calls for a box of identical shirts.

You do not have to classify products yourself. A real person builds the store with your organization, and a print professional reviews every design before launch, so anything that fits better as a bulk order is identified before your store goes live.
