What's the difference between DTF and DTG printing?

DTG (direct-to-garment) sprays water-based ink directly into the fabric, while DTF (direct-to-film) prints the design onto a film that is then heat-pressed onto the garment. DTG gives the softest feel and the finest detail and works best on 100% cotton; DTF delivers brighter, more saturated color and works on polyester and blends. Both are forms of digital printing

DTG and DTF are the two workhorses of digital printing on apparel. They share the qualities that make on-demand merch possible: each item is printed individually as a supporter orders it, so there are no minimums to hit and no inventory for your organization to buy. Digital printing as a whole decorates about 63% of the items sold through our storefronts, so the odds are good your design will be printed digitally. The difference between DTG and DTF comes down to how the ink reaches the garment — and that affects feel, color, and which fabrics each method suits.

DTG: ink sprayed directly into the fabric

With DTG, water-based ink is sprayed straight into the fibers of the garment. Because the ink sinks into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, DTG produces the softest feel — the design becomes part of the shirt.

DTG is at its best on 100% cotton, and it is the strongest choice for fine detail. There are no minimum line weights, and gradients and soft shading print smoothly. One limit applies to every method, though: no printed ink can be partially transparent, so artwork that relies on transparency or opacity effects gets simplified for print no matter how it is produced. The trade-offs: colors appear somewhat less vibrant on dark garments, and a few specialty garment colors do not take DTG well — we steer those designs to other methods.

DTF: printed to film, then heat-pressed on

DTF flips the process: the design is printed onto a film first, then heat-pressed onto the garment. The result is brighter, more saturated color than DTG can achieve, and because the print bonds to the surface rather than soaking in, DTF works on polyester and blends — fabrics where DTG is not at its best.

The trade-offs run the other way. Large solid designs can feel a little heavier on the shirt. Because DTF lays down a solid white underbase beneath the design, transparencies, opacities, drop shadows, and gradients become solid shapes — soft effects do not survive the process. Fine artwork also needs enough weight to press cleanly: line weights of at least 1pt on garments and 2pt on hats and textured items, with negative spaces of at least 2pt.
